About This Event
Looking to green up your living space but don't quite have a green thumb yet? Join us for Common Roots, an exciting collaborative event presented by OPAL and the Outdoor Programs Office (OPO) as part of Xpressions of Dartmouth 2026. Intentionally designed for beginners, this hands-on workshop breaks down the barriers to gardening and gives anyone interested in house plants a welcoming place to start. You will have the opportunity to take home your very own plant trimmings, and the experts from OPO will be on-site to teach you exactly how to care for these beautiful indigenous plants. To sweeten the evening, we will be serving up a nostalgic favorite: Mud Cups, the classic childhood treat made of chocolate pudding, crushed Oreo "dirt," and gummy worms. The learning doesn't have to stop when the hour is up, either. To help you connect even deeper with the local environment, OPO will be hosting a follow-up nature walk the very next day to explore these indigenous plants in their natural habitats.Whether you are a seasoned plant parent or someone who has historically struggled to keep a succulent alive, Common Roots is the perfect opportunity to dig into a new skill, enjoy a sweet treat, and find your community. All materials, plants, and snacks are completely free, and absolutely no prior gardening experience is required — just bring your curiosity and an appetite for fun!
