About This Event

¿Ser o no ser? What does it truly mean "to be" in a world that looks the other way? Playful, powerful and joyful—a radical reimagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet, featuring eight actors with Down syndrome. Versions of the original text intermingle with personal anecdotes from the cast in a provocative dialogue that brings us face to face with the themes of empathy, exclusion and the irrepressible human spirit. The high-energy performance upends the Shakespearean focus on the individual—here, the melancholic Prince—and instead centers community. Hailed across its runs at Lincoln Center, Theatre for a New Audience and the Edinburgh International Festival, the pioneering work from Peruvian theater company Teatro La Plaza now lands at the Hop, pulsing with life and classic lessons we desperately need to relearn today. This event will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles. This performance contains adult themes and mature language, and features atmospheric haze. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
