About This Event
Inspired by Twyla Tharp’s The Creative Habit, this special 4 week online workshop helps participants build a sustainable creative practice through daily rituals, guided exercises, reflection, and experimentation. Participants will be guided by speaker and artist Mica Seely and Executive Director of TEDx Woodstock, Deborah Greene, through exploration of creativity, discipline, process, and artistic development, using principles drawn from Tharp’s six-decade career.
Course Philosophy
Creativity isn't a gift—it's a skill developed through deliberate daily practice. You'll internalize Tharp's core teachings: rituals spark creativity, scratching (gathering raw material) fuels innovation, and constraints liberate your artistic vision.
Week 1: Foundation & Rituals
Establish your personal creative ritual and begin keeping a scratch notebook. Identify your creative DNA and learn to work with the blank page rather than fear it.
Week 2: Process & Discipline
Practice structured improvisation, explore productive constraints (like Tharp's famous box method), and tackle failure as feedback. Learn her "spine" technique for finding the central idea of any project.
Week 3: Integration & Mastery
Create a blueprint for long-term projects, develop strategies for protecting your creative time, and complete a small project using everything you've learned.
Online workshops will be held Monday nights over Zoom, then on June 26th, you’ll spend the day with Twyla Tharp herself, in person. This intimate masterclass features a live critique of participants' work, creative exercises led by Tharp, stories from her six-decade career, and a Q&A about building a life in the arts.
